Rustic Irish Soda Bread~Whole Wheat

Is it too late to post a St. Patrick’s Day type recipe?  I didn’t think so.

I’m posting on both blogs today because I’m on a little hiatus from my impromptu, experimental “graphics career” while my husband works on a contract renegotiation for the app. he is creating.  Sigh.  Things went a little wonky just when we were so close to finishing and after all that pushing for the finish line my fingers are aching to keep busy on the designing and my mind will not slow down at night when it was getting used to staying busy through those hours.  I don’t even feel like cooking, which, in itself, attests to fact that I am feeling out of whack.  One day off the project has turned into a good week and at the end of it I will know if I am to pick up where we left off, start learning an entirely new style of graphics design when I only just started learning the other, or if he is, once and for all, going to find someone from the outside to do the graphics.

Spring cleaning, exercising, and blogging got me through the week thus far, but after getting smacked with another head cold I have decided to sit and putter for the rest of the day in an attempt to rest up for my son’s Minecraft birthday cake making marathon that will begin after breakfast in the morning.  Had to go showing off making that Missile Command cake for his brother, didn’t I?  I may officially end up in over my head in fondant this time rather than just up to my elbows like the 0ther times I have made their cakes, but the sweet little guy has promised that it will be just fine if I totally mess it up.  Nice, nice boy!

This soda bread turned out well, but as you can see from the photos I may have made my criss-cross cut a little too deep before baking the loaf.  It ended up looking a little like one of those sci-fi flick, man-eating plants.  For safety’s sake, I kept the finished bread at arm’s length until it was thoroughly dispatched with my trusty bread knife and smothered with butter.


4 1/2 c. whole wheat flour

1/4 tsp. salt

1 tsp. baking soda

1/2 tsp. baking powder

2 1/2 c. milk


Heat oven to 400 degrees.  Sift together the dry ingredients.

Add the milk.  Stir until combined, then knead on a floured surface and form a round loaf.

Place on a greased baking sheet or stone.  Cut an X in the top.

Lightly mist with water and bake.

I did not note the time that it took to bake the bread.  I can be a real dope that way sometimes, but I can tell you that I baked it just until it was…done.  Wince.  Maybe 25 minutes?  It sounds thumpy and is no longer doughy when it is finished.  That’s no good either, is it?  How ’bout I bake another loaf and correct my mistake here at another time in case anyone needs to know an exact baking time.  Best I can do…Sorry.
